About This Recipe

My favourite Garlic Bread is Cheesy Garlic Bread, you can make this bread at home with just a few simple ingredients. I have used Ciabatta bread for a more authentic Italian taste.

The best thing about this Garlic Bread recipe is that you can use any cheese you like to create a truly unique taste every time.

You can use all sorts of bread to make this recipe, Sourdough, Focaccia or as I have done Ciabatta. I find this type of Italian bread the best type as it is porous and light. ...

Origins of Cheesy Garlic Bread
The origins of cheesy garlic bread can be traced back to the culinary traditions of Italy, where bread has long been a staple.

The concept of combining garlic with bread dates back centuries, as garlic has been used in Mediterranean cooking for its flavor and health benefits. However, the delightful addition of cheese transformed this simple dish into a beloved favourite.

In the United States, cheesy garlic bread gained popularity in the late 20th century, particularly as a side dish in pizzerias and Italian restaurants. The combination of warm, crusty bread slathered with buttery garlic spread and topped with gooey, melted cheese quickly became a comfort food classic.

Today, variations abound, with some recipes incorporating herbs, spices, or even different types of cheese, but the essence of cheesy garlic bread remains the same: a deliciously indulgent treat that brings people together over shared meals and good times.

You can make Garlic Bread with any type of bread, but I find that the best bread to use is a Rustic Italian Ciabatta as it is porus and soaks up all of the flavour from the Garlic Butter.

The key to this Garlic Bread is making your own Garlic Butter, I have used some Salted Butter, Lazy Garlic and dry Sage, but you can use other herbs such as Basil or Coriander.

Variations of Garlic Bread
Garlic bread can be prepared in various ways, each offering a unique twist on the classic recipe.

Traditional garlic bread typically features a base of crusty bread, generously spread with a mixture of butter, minced garlic, and herbs, then toasted to perfection.

However, variations abound, including the use of different types of bread such as baguettes or ciabatta, and the addition of ingredients like cheese, olive oil, or spices to enhance flavour.

Some recipes even incorporate roasted garlic for a milder taste or infuse the butter with herbs like parsley or basil for added freshness..

Cooking Instructions

  1. Soften the butter in a microwave so that you can mix it up into a soft paste with a spoon.
  2. Add the Garlic and the Sage to the Butter and mix the lot together, then set this aside for later.
  3. Using either a hand grater, grate up the Cheese. I have just used plain Cheddar Cheese but you can use any type of cheese you like, even a Red Leicester to add a nice bit of colour to the bread.
  4. Slice the Ciabatta through the centre so that you have two halves. I have used this type of Italian bread because of its porous, rustic texture that will soak up the Garlic Butter.
  5. Using a knife or the back of a spoon, spread the two halves of bread with a generous amount of butter, so that the whole slice is covered.
  6. Toast the bread under a pre-heated grill for a few minutes, so that the butter fully melts and the bread is slightly brown.
  7. Top the breads with the cheese, don't use too much as this will just make the Garlic Bread soggy, so just enough to cover the bread, Then return this to the grill so that the cheese can fully melt and slightly brown off.
