History of Mulled Wine
The tradition of mulled wine, a spiced and heated beverage, has its roots in ancient history, tracing back to the Roman Empire. As early as the 2nd century AD, Romans would warm their wine and infuse it with various spices, a practice that was both a means of preserving the wine and enhancing its flavour.

This practice spread throughout Europe, evolving over the centuries into the beloved winter drink we know today.

In medieval times, mulled wine became particularly popular in Northern Europe, where it was often referred to as "hypocras," named after a 14th-century physician who created a spiced wine recipe. The drink was not only enjoyed for its warming qualities during the cold months but was also believed to have medicinal properties, often served at feasts and gatherings.

By the 19th century, mulled wine had firmly established itself in holiday traditions, particularly in Germany, where it is known as "Glühwein," and in the United Kingdom, where it is commonly served at Christmas markets.

Today, mulled wine continues to be a festive staple, with countless variations that reflect regional tastes and preferences, showcasing the enduring appeal of this aromatic concoction throughout the ages.

Cooking Instructions

There are many ways of making Mulled Wine and I am going to mix the traditional with the modern. We are going to boil the fruit and spices in a pan but warm the wine and hold it in a slow cooker.

Before we start we need to split the Vanilla pod by slicing it down the middle and cut up the fruit into segments, then set the slow cooker to High.

  1. Put the Lemons , Water , Brown Sugar , Cloves , Cinnamon , Oranges , Vanilla Pod , Nutmeg , Star Anise & Bay leaves into a large pan and bring to the Boil, then simmer for 10 - 15 minutes.
  2. While the pan of festive fruit and spices are simmering on the stove you can empty the two bottles of red wine into the slow cooker.
  3. When the pan has been simmering for 15 minutes and you can smell the aroma of the spices, remove it from the heat and empty it into the slow cooker with the wine mix together.
  4. Put the lid on the slow cooker and reduce the heat to Low for 30 minutes to 1 hour before serving.

Chefs Tips

The great thing about making Mulled Wine this way is that it will keep for days on warm in a slow cooker, if you can resist the temptation to drink it that long.
