Origins of Batter
The origins of batter can be traced back to ancient culinary practices, where the combination of flour and liquid was first utilized to create a cohesive mixture for cooking. Historical records suggest that early civilizations, such as the Egyptians and the Chinese, experimented with various forms of batter, using locally available grains and water to produce simple flatbreads and cakes.

As trade routes expanded and cultures intermingled, the techniques for preparing batter evolved, incorporating diverse ingredients like eggs, milk, and leavening agents, which enhanced the texture and flavor of the final products. By the Middle Ages, batter had become a staple in European kitchens, leading to the development of a wide array of dishes, from pancakes to pastries.

This evolution not only reflects the ingenuity of cooks throughout history but also highlights the cultural significance of batter in various culinary traditions around the world, as it continues to serve as a foundational element in both sweet and savory recipes today.

    Homemade Beer Batter

This batter is the secret to a good battered fish or even a sausage in batter. I also use this batter mix to make Chinese chicken balls in batter.

The secret to a great batter is the liquid, we are making a Beer Batter so rather obviously we are using Beer (Lager). You could substitute this for some other fizzy liquid such as Soda water, but this will change the taste of the batter.
