About This Recipe

The basic idea behind the Mexican Lasagne is the same as the Italian Lasagne, layers of Ragu but separated with Tortilla wraps instead of pasta.

In this recipe we use Tortilla Wraps in place of Pasta Sheets and the Beef is cooked in an Iconic Mexican sauce called Mole. Mole is the national dish of Mexico so it is worth getting this right for an authentic Mexican taste.

You could use a Tex-Mex Chilli for this recipe if you want to add an extra twist the the dish. ...

History of Mexican Lasagne
The history of Mexican lasagna is a fascinating blend of culinary traditions that reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Mexico.

While traditional lasagna is rooted in Italian cuisine, the Mexican version incorporates local ingredients and flavours, creating a unique dish that resonates with the country's gastronomic heritage.

The adaptation likely began in the late 20th century as Mexican chefs and home cooks sought to merge the comforting layers of pasta with the vibrant tastes of Mexican cuisine.

Ingredients such as corn tortillas often replace the pasta sheets, while fillings may include a variety of meats, beans, cheese, and an array of spices, including cumin and chili powder, which infuse the dish with a distinctively Mexican flair. Additionally, the use of salsas and fresh herbs like cilantro enhances the overall flavour, making Mexican lasagna a beloved comfort food that showcases the creativity and resourcefulness of Mexican cooking.

This dish not only serves as a testament to the fusion of cultures but also highlights the adaptability of traditional recipes to incorporate local tastes and ingredients, resulting in a culinary experience that is both familiar and innovative.

What is Mexican Lasagne

Mexican lasagna is a dish that combines traditional Italian lasagna elements with vibrant Mexican flavours and ingredients.

Instead of the classic pasta sheets, this variation often utilizes tortillas, which serve as a base and add a unique texture. The layers typically consist of seasoned ground meat, such as beef or chicken, combined with beans, corn, and a rich tomato sauce infused with spices like cumin and chili powder.

Additionally, cheese plays a crucial role, with varieties such as Monterey Jack or queso fresco providing a creamy, melty contrast to the other components.

Topped with fresh cilantro, avocado, or a dollop of sour cream, Mexican lasagna offers a hearty and satisfying meal that showcases the best of both culinary traditions, making it a popular choice for family gatherings and festive occasions.

For an added authentic taste the recipe uses 'Mole' which is the national dish of Mexico.
